Randy Koons started playing drums at the age of 12, and was self taught until the age of 15. It was then he became a student of William Schinstine, first percussionist with the San Anotonio Symphony Orchestra, and remained so for three years.
Other professional instructors over the years included Paul Patterson, Arman Santorelli, and Roy Burns, clinician for CBS musical instruments owner of Aquarian Drum Heads. Randy has played professionally with the following bands: The Four Lads, The Four Aces, The Gene Dennis Trio, Bobby Haggert, and George Young.
He was employed professionally by The Downingtown Motor Inn, as the back up drummer for various acts including Engelbert Hunperdink, Charlie Kallis, Frank Sinatra Jr., Mickey Rooney, and the pointer Sisters. Randy has written various snare instructional books, as well as choreographing and writing music for marching band competitions with Phoenixville, Owen J Roberts, Sprinford, and Pottstown High Schools. Randy has been teaching drums for 49 years, and occasionally writes articles for Modern Drummer Magazine, and plays in the Reading and Lehigh Valley area.
